HELICOPTER
APPROACH
The
common approach from Dalcross leads down Glen Affric and Glen
Lichd into Strath Croe. On entering Strath Croe, obvious signs
of habitation and agriculture are seen and a left turn brings
you toward the Kintail base a few hundred metres away at
Morvich.

Duich. Click on the photograph for more details.
Approaching
from the west or south-east may lead you down Glen Shiel or
Loch Alsh to the head of Loch Duich near Shiel Bridge. Turn
ENE and you are headed into Strath Croe. The main A87(T) road
crosses the loch on a causeway. 1200m beyond this, another
road crosses the strath and just beyond that second road, near
the left end of a line of coniferous trees, is the Kintail
base.
The
Kintail base is a single-storey L-shaped building across the
road from the caravan site.

HELICOPTER
LANDING SITE & OBSTRUCTIONS
In
the field to the east of the building is a hardened area for
landing helicopters. It is obstruction-free within a radius of
at least 25m. Low domestic electricity wires pass to the south
and the west at a minimum distance of 35m. It is best suited
to landing on a heading of about 210 degrees which is head
into the prevailing winds and facing the nearest obstructions.
During
summer, there may be tents pitched in the triangular grass
area across the road from the landing site. Avoiding a final
approach from the North will prevent damage to tents by
downwash.
On
close approach, you will be able to identify the hardened
area. It is about 20m across and slightly raised. In
case of difficulty, ask by radio for assistance from the
ground.
A
track is provided for ambulance access to the landing site
from the Morvich road.

is normal practice, as defined in the UK Land SAR Standard
